Table Cricket launched at Agape School

The Lord’s Taverners South Africa’s first Table Cricket handover in the Western Cape took place at Agape School in Mitchells Plain on 28 April.

Agape is a school of over 200 pupils with varying disabilities. The occasion was attended by many students, the school principal of long-standing, Bernice Lambert, Lord’s Taverners chairman Ian Kilbride from Warwick Wealth, who are sponsors of the Lord’s Taverners.

Also present were Lord’s Taverners ambassadors Robin Jackman and SuperSport commentator Jeremy Fredericks, along with Natalie Pollock and her colleagues from Sporting Chance to show the children how the game was played.

Fredericks, a former schoolteacher himself, had many wise words for the children.

After a brief introduction by the principal, ‘Jackers’ explained to those present how The Lord’s Taverners had started in the UK with the sole purpose of raising money to give children with disabilities a sporting chance.

Millions of pounds have been raised over the years, with sporting celebrities and those from stage and screen giving up their time to raise funds. It was explained that there is a Lord’s Taverners chapter in Australia and South Africa’s chapter was launched earlier this year.

After the handover, the game was explained by the Sporting Chance representatives and the children had great fun playing the game that is new to South Africa. It is intended that, as in the UK, there will soon be inter-schools matches leading to inter-provincial. A truly fabulous initiative!
